Phone Scam and Motor Vehicle Thefts, posted July 28, 2010
The North Smithfield Police Department is alerting residents about a phone scam. The caller will target generally the elderly and call from a number with an 876 area code. Caller will state that the party won a significant amount of money. However, in order to claim the prize, the caller asks the target to send a Western Union check in a specific amount in order to have the prize sent. The address that the caller is asking the money be sent to can vary. The most recent address was in Winter Springs, FL.
The Police Department is also warning residents of an increase in thefts from motor vehicles. Unknown individuals have been entering vehicles and taking items from them. Residents are urged to keep their vehicles locked and be vigilant.
