The Town of North Smithfield references the International Building / Residential Code for the purpose of establishing rules and regulations for the construction, alteration, removal, demolition, equipment, location and maintenance of buildings and structures, use and occupancy, including permits and penalties.
Zoning Certificates: Are required prior to the approval of a proposed use.
Types of Permits: There are several types of permits required for building structures, fences, swimming pools, and signs whether new construction or alterations. A Building Permit does not cover all phases of construction / remodeling. Other permits may be required such as Moving or Demolition, Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing, Water, and Sewer. A Certificate of Occupancy or Certificate of Completion is required prior to the occupancy of all buildings.
Obtaining a Permit: Permits can be obtained in the building official’s office. Some permits require a site drawing, showing location of proposed structure, indicating setbacks to property lines and other structures. Two sets of structural drawings are required. Affidavit or authorization of homeowner is also required. All permits must be applied for prior to commencement of work.
Common Projects That Require Permits: Finishing previously unfinished rooms, decks, storage sheds, fireplaces, pellet stoves, woodstoves, demolishing structures, siding, shingling roofs, and swimming pools.
Historic Area: In addition to permits, this particular area of Town requires special applications from the Historical Commission, made available in the Building Inspection Department.
